What mold looks like: 50 real photos

Mold in a house rarely looks like the fuzzy patch in a stock photo. On a ceiling it usually starts as a gray haze or scattered dark spots. Around a vent it forms a ring or a fan. Behind a wall it is a dark stain you only see once the drywall comes off.

Every photo on this page was taken by us, in South Louisiana houses and in our own tests. None are stock images and none are made by AI.

The color will not tell you what it is — only a lab can do that. Where it is growing tells you a lot more, because it shows you where the moisture is.

Mold on ceilings

On a ceiling it usually starts as a gray haze or a scatter of dark spots, and it is worst in bathrooms, closets and along the line where the ceiling meets an outside wall. A ring around a stain means water came through from above.

Mold on and around AC vents

Around a vent it forms a ring or a fan, because that is where cold air from the system meets warmer, wetter air in the room. Pull the cover and you often find it packed into the fins.

Mold on walls

On walls it streaks, speckles, or climbs up from a corner. In a closet it usually sits behind whatever is stored against the wall, where air does not move.

Mold behind walls and under floors

This is the part nobody sees until the material comes off. A small spot along a baseboard can be the edge of a whole wall cavity.

Common questions

What does mold look like in a house?

Usually not the fuzzy patch in a stock photo. On ceilings it starts as a gray haze or scattered dark spots. Around vents it forms a ring or a fan. On walls it streaks or climbs from a corner. Behind walls it is often a dark stain you only see once the drywall comes off.

Can you tell what kind of mold it is from a photo?

No. Color and texture do not identify mold. Black growth can be several unrelated organisms, and only a laboratory can say what a sample is. What a photo can show is where the moisture is, and that is what decides the fix.

Is that mold or just dirt?

Dirt wipes off evenly and does not come back. Growth tends to return in the same place, often in spots or rings, and it usually sits where there is moisture: around vents, above showers, in corners and along outside walls. A musty smell in the same room is another sign.
