I have mold and I can't get anyone to help me

You know you have mold. You can see it, or you can smell it, and you cannot get anyone to tell you what to do about it.

You have called four companies. One wanted a protocol before they would talk. One booked you and never showed. One said they would call back. Nobody has come out.

You are not doing anything wrong and you are not unlucky. You are finding the wrong numbers, and there is a specific reason why.

What is actually happening

Most of the numbers at the top of a mold search do not belong to the company that answers. They belong to lead brokers — marketing companies that buy the search placement and sell the call to whoever is paying that day.

Those leads are priced against remediation work. An exclusive mold lead runs $150 to $400. A shared one runs $45 to $150.

Now put a mold test next to that. A test costs $250 to $500, and the average inspection is $671.

The lead can cost more than the job. Nobody can buy a $400 call to sell a $300 test, which is why testing leads are not sold — and why every number in that block belongs to somebody who needs your call to turn into a removal job.

So you call, you say you need testing, and they turn you away. You call the next one and the same thing happens, because it is the same set of numbers.

That is the loop. It is not personal and it is not about you.

And a large portion of what sits in that block is not vetted at all. Buying an ad is not a credential. Some of those companies decided recently that they would do mold, and nothing in a paid placement tells you otherwise.

How to find a real company

Scroll past the paid block and the directories, into the ordinary results.

Then search the company's name on its own. A real company has a business profile with photographs of its own work and reviews from people in your area, at a fixed address. If the name returns nothing like that, it is not a company — it is a route to one.

Then call the company directly, from its own website.

Which one you need

If you need testing, look for a company that does testing and assessment only. Independent. That is a different search and a different set of companies.

If you need the mold removed, look for a remediation company and call it directly.

If you are not sure which one you need, that is normal, and it is a two-minute conversation with someone who does this for a living — not a reason to keep calling numbers.

What calling directly is worth

Like most companies in this trade, we pay for some of our calls. When you find us yourself, that cost is not attached to your job — and we pass it back. The discount is built into the calculator on our cost page.
